I found American Grippen to contain much useful information, and many insights on the selection process for weapon selection by the military. That process vindicates the old saw "too many cooks spoil the broth". The raw information in the book is invaluable; on its own rating five stars.The lack of organization is very frustrating. The book is difficult to follow. It requires too much backing up and re-reading to follow the narrative.
"American Grippen" is still an important book, and it's message is essential to every citizen. Our survival rests on an understanding of the arms acquisition process.

Stealth, as practiced by the F-22 and F-35, is optimised on radar in the X band from 7.0 to 11.2 gigahertz. Detection in other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum has improved a lot over the last twenty years. Chief of these is infrared search and track (IRST) which enables an F-35 to be detected from its engine exhaust from over 60 miles away. The latest iteration of the Su-27 Flanker family, the Su-35, has IRST and L band radar on its wings. L band and lower frequency radars can see stealthy aircraft over 100 miles away. So an Su-35 can see a F-35 well before the F-35 can detect it. Stealth, as an end in itself, has outlived its usefulness, and maintaining that RAM coating is killing the budget for no good reason.
The first F-35 to come off the assembly line was in 2006. That was ten years ago and, even though the F-35 is still years of from going into full production, it needs a $2.6 billion modernisation to upgrade its combat power. The solution to the F-35 nightmare first flew in 2008. This is the Gripen E of Saab in Sweden, updated from the original Gripen A of 1988. It is a delta wing with canards, likely the ideal planform for a single-engine air-superiority fighter. As an air-superiority fighter, it is almost as good as the F-22 – good to the extent that the work of 10 F-22s could be done by 15 Gripen Es. Those 10 F-22s would be equivalent to 40 F-35s. Importantly, the Gripen-E is half the capital cost of the F-35, with an operating cost per hour that is one sixth that of the F-35. The Gripen E has a high proportion of U.S.-made parts, including the engine, which is the one used by the F-18 Super Hornet.America's air superiority is currently provided by a handful of F-22s, which are likely to be overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of late-model Chinese fighter aircraft. Once the F-22s are shot down, the rest of the Air Force will be defenseless, even if the F-35 were in service and worked as designed.

The USA and its main allies have signed up for a front line fighter that is wickedly expensive at $ 270 million each, is ten years late in production, and still not combat -ready, is comprehensively outclassed in battle by the modern jet fighters of other nations, and in the event an F 35 pilot is forced to bail out of a crippled F 35 he is likely to break his neck as American testing clearly shows the pilot"s helmet catches on the back of the cockpit as the pilot ejects. The F 35 is promoted by many Governments and their militaries as the main strike fighter for the next 40 years, when the opposition aircraft are clearly superior in performance and weaponry.
Somebody finally sat down and tallied all the deficiencies of the Pentagon’s largest weapons program. It isn’t like F35 detractors wanted the airplane to fail, quite the opposite in fact. But years of relentless and inaccurate cheerleading by Lockheed, and blatant downright lying by the Armed Forces needs to be contrasted with forthright and accurate opposition before this thing fails in combat.
I bought this book to learn about what considerations are of high priority when comparing modern fighter/strike aircraft. It met my expectations and more. It is an excellent read.
GREAT BOOK...I Highly recommend to anyone interested in seeing how utterly worthless the F-35 is and how it alone will probably kill more of our great fighter pilots than any foreign power...you can lay their deaths (if we ever engage in a real shooting war) at the feet of the DC Lobbyists

I am a retired B737 captain with a keen interest in military aviation and everything geopolitical.
Lots has been reported about the F35 and its shortcomings. The Trump Administration even talked about scrapping the whole thing.
I had read one of the author's book in the past (The Twilight of Abundance) and couldn't wait to put my hands on "American Gripen".
David Archibald is the closest thing to an Australian Tom Clancy. He doesn't yet, to my knowledge, write fiction but will we ever be in for a treat if he ever does.
I was thoroughly impressed from page one. The amount of research the author must have done to present his argument is nothing but exceptional.
I felt alternatively like I was
1-reading an F35 Flight Crew Operating Manual,
2-listening to a series of US military briefings, including some very critical of the F35,
3- privy to American, Chinese and Russian military strategists discussing 21st century warfare,
4- being given a presentation on high speed aerodynamics and top of the line weapon systems.
David adopts a no holds barred approach to his thesis. He is predictably critical of the F35 and presents his case like a lawyer in a court of law. He does, like the title of the book suggests, propose the Swedish Saab Gripen E as a better alternative.
Chapter 8 titled "The China Match-Up" could initially be interpreted as off-topic as it describes in detail what a military confrontation with China would look like. I actually found this part of the book the most interesting.
This book will fascinate Air Force aficionados worldwide and is an absolute must read for anyone wanting to piece together the inner workings of modern military aviation.
